Maintaining the SANI-TANK Marine Sewage Treatment System
Some regular maintenance is required to keep your SANI-TANK running at peak performance. Many of the maintenance tasks will depend on the amount of use that the system gets. As you become familiar with your particular situation, you will be able to schedule maintenance as necessary.
A. Periodic flushing of the Holding Tank
If the system is being used on a daily basis by several people, e.g. charter houseboats or live-aboard families, it is recommended that the Holding Tank is flushed out at least twice a month (this may be done correspondingly less frequently for lower usage levels).
Flush the tank as follows (Note: Do not perform this process in a boat harbour or any other prohibited-discharge area):
1. Run the discharge pump by pressing the manual button to empty the Holding Tank. The system will detect when the tank is empty and turn the pump off.
2. Flush a toilet several times to put clean chlorinated salt water into the Holding Tank.
3. If available, activate the Cleansing Cycle by pressing and holding the manual button for 8 seconds. The Cleansing Cycle will empty the Holding Tank, start the pressure pump (if fitted) to refill the Holding Tank with fresh seawater, empty the Tank, refill the Tank and then empty the Tank again. This will take several minutes, depending on tank size.
4. Alternatively, if some other means of refilling and/or cleansing the Holding Tank has been provided, empty the Holding Tank by pressing the manual button, refill, empty, refill and empty again to make the system ready for use.
B. Checking the Cell Tank
As a side-effect of disinfectant production, the Electrode in the Cell Tank creates a calcium/magnesium deposit. This deposit is automatically cleaned off the Electrode when the Electrode reverses polarity after every twelve hours of continuous operation and the deposit sinks to the bottom of the Cell Tank.
If the system is very heavily used, this deposit may build up over several months until it touches the bottom of the Electrode, which may affect the efficiency of the Electrode Cell. It is recommended that the Cell Tank be checked, cleaned out and re-filled with clean seawater once every six months.
To do this:
1. Switch off the power to the Control Module.
2. Disconnect the vent hose from the Electrode Cell Cap and remove the Electrode Cell assembly.
Caution: After several months of use, the Cell Tank will contain a strong solution of hypochlorous acid. If this acid is accidentally spilled on skin or any other susceptible surfaces, wash the surface thoroughly with clean fresh water.
3. Inspect the Electrode for hard deposits and remove them if any; rinse the Electrode only in clean water (salt or fresh).
4. Disconnect and carefully remove the Cell Tank.
5. Empty the remaining disinfecting fluid out of the Cell Tank.
6. Rinse the Cell Tank until it is clean; also check the condition of the tank fittings and the dosing pump.
7. Re-install the Tank, re-fill with clean seawater and re-connect the Cell Tank.
8. Replace Electrode Cap and vent hose.
9. Restore power; flush one or more toilets and check that the dosing pump is operating correctly.
Note: Restoring power to the system will initiate an automated self-check, including commencing an initial chlorine generation process, as indicated by the green Cell light turning on and remaining on for several hours, depending on the jumper settings inside the control box.
